Real Estate
The cost of living in Dickinson County is significantly less than the national average. In our largest city, Abilene, the cost of living is 80.3% of the national average. The biggest savings can be found in the county’s low real estate prices. At only 52% of the national average, families in Dickinson County are paying half of what they would elsewhere for a comparable home. Such a savings makes it possible for millennials to purchase a home after graduating from college, for young families to own a home and have money to spare, and for retirees to use their social security checks on entertainment and life, rather than on an expensive mortgage or rental.
In Abilene, for example, the average home price is only $107,000. In Herington, it’s even lower at $58.500. Still, paying less does not mean sacrificing quality or beauty. In Dickinson County, buyers can find lovingly restored historic homes, tasteful ranchers, new construction, craftsman-style bungalows, and cottages – something for every taste and budget. In addition, buyers can choose between living in a charming community near shops and restaurants or having acreage just outside of town.
Those who would prefer to rent can expect to pay as little as $425 a month for an apartment or $1,500 to rent a large family home.
