Civic Engagement

The Chamber identifies issues that affect regional economic sustainability and mobilizes efforts toward solving those issues through civic engagement.

Strategic Advocacy Priorities

The Chamber, in collaboration with its members and partners, will identify issues that affect regional economic sustainability in the Abilene area and will advocate for solutions to those issues through education and civic engagement among businesses, non-profit organizations and government.

Advocacy Objectives

Enhance member awareness and civic engagement regarding legislative and community issues through educational events and effective and timely communications.

Identify and secure resources needed for successful business development though effective communication among members, community leaders, government officials and agencies.

Routinely communicate the needs of the business community to local, state and regional officials and encourage balanced, common-sense approaches to policy decisions.

Education & Civic Engagement Committee

The Education & Civic Engagement Committee will work to provide opportunities for our members to develop business management skills in a clear and concise format is vital to community development.  This committee will also be responsible for educating and advocating on behalf of a diverse business community. This will include keeping up to date and reporting on legislative actions of the city, county and state. Members of this committee should be in tune with the educational needs of area businesses and have a general working knowledge of governmental hierarchy and the local political climate.  (The Education & Civic Engagement Committee may coordinate with the Events & Fundraising Committee on some activities.)

Education & Civic Engagement Committee Responsibilities:

  • Identify relevant training topics
  • Organize training events and resources
  • Disseminate training information
  • Evaluate existing and on-going training efforts
  • Update the Chamber Board on relevant government and legislative issues
  • Coordinate periodic governmental update forums with city, county, and state representatives
  • Organize candidate forums for upcoming elections
